He is surely a traditional golfer
And can talk about all the Masters.
He sees himself in the classical vein
Not wanting his life to change any faster…
He likes very much to look the part
Thus identifying more with the game.
He follows the tournaments on TV
And most of the pros he knows by name.
His knickers are baggy and brown
And he wears argyle sweaters and socks.
He likes the greens cut low and fast
And he’ll toss aside all twigs and rocks.
Most of his buddies will rib him
For the clubs he has in his bag.
They think their names are ever so odd---
Though heavy, he is never known to lag.
Well, it is really not only Butch…
His caddies have to dress the part!
They have to learn those vintage names
And to know the club uses by heart!
Some on-lookers scratch their heads—
It is like stepping back into time!
Here they are on a modern course
But terms are strange, rather out of line.
The starters often examine his clubs—
His golf balls and tees as well.
Butch is traditional, that’s for sure
And he puts some on-lookers in a spell…
His tee shots are usually predictable—
Usually quite steady and straight.
But if the wind is a negative factor
Butch will drive to compensate.
Butch plays with hackers and duffers…
Also with hookers and many slicers
And some who get mad and throw their clubs!
But Butch is never a sour enticer.
He is always a good influence
Because his heart is in the game.
And usually his only frustration
Is when caddies forget those vintage names!
The grip, shaft, and club heads should meld…
Shafts are usually hickory or pecan.
A little bit of spring is usually preferred,
Clubs are not loaned to any Dick, Harry, or Tom!
Butch takes into account the weather,
The humidity as well as the temp.
Both affect the ascent and the loft.
So, just park yourself in the shade of a tent!
Butch gets razzed a lot for his clubs
But is most versatile with his cleek!
He uses his jigger when close to the green
And when shooting par folks have good things to speak!
He has honed a lot with his Brassie---
Uses his Niblick when in the sand.
He rarely will lose a golf ball
And, after eighteen holes…he’s the man!
